Both Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard are charming and picturesque islands located off the coast of Massachusetts. Every summer I take a trip here with my family and it’s the perfect holiday! A short ferry ride separates the two islands and I highly recommend visiting both. Below are 7 compelling reasons to visit these beautiful destinations:

Stunning Beaches: Both islands boast exquisite sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters. You can relax on the shores, swim, sunbathe, and enjoy water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding. On Martha’s Vineyard we stayed at family friendly Winnetu Oceanside Resort with access to South Beach- voted “one of the best beaches in the world” according to Travel and Leisure. It was really enjoyable taking long walks on this beautiful beach!

Rich History and Culture: Both islands have a rich maritime history and were once major whaling centers. You can explore their historic districts, visit museums, and learn about their captivating past. Whale watching season begins mid-April when hundreds of whales migrate off the coast of Massachusetts to their feeding grounds. The best time to see whales are during the months of June, July, August and September. It is well worth taking a whale watching boat tour- you’ll be mesmerized!

Scenic Landscapes: The landscapes of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard are breathtaking. You’ll find rolling dunes, lush forests, and picturesque lighthouses that offer fantastic photo opportunities. One of my favorite activities is biking on the many accessible bike trails that exist all over Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. The scenery is unforgettable!

Quaint Towns and Villages: Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard are home to charming towns and villages with cobblestone streets, historic homes, boutique shops, and art galleries. Strolling through these areas is a delight! Sconset, Nantucket is a must-visit with its narrow streets, rose-covered cottages and beautifully manicured gardens. During my visit to Oak Bluffs, I couldn’t stop taking photos of the “Gingerbread Cottages.” I felt as though I was in a storybook!

Outdoor Activities: From biking and hiking trails to kayaking and sailing, outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities to indulge in and enjoy the islands’ scenic landscapes. We enjoyed family biking adventures, pickle-ball tournaments and bowling. We spent an evening at Nomans in Oak Bluffs and loved all the outdoor games, live music and delicious lobster rolls!

Culinary Delights: Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard boast a vibrant culinary scene, offering delicious seafood, farm-to-table cuisine, and various dining options to cater to all tastes. A few favorites restaurants in Nantucket include Cru, The Nautilus and Galley Beach (you can eat with your toes in the sand!).

Relaxation and Escapism: Both Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard offer a sense of tranquility and escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, making them perfect destinations for a peaceful getaway. There is truly something for everyone whether you’re looking to enjoy the outdoors, be amazed by the culinary scene or simply relax! I work with exceptional hotels on both islands- reach out if you have any questions or want help planning your next family holiday!
